This Building in Saugerties Used to be a Popular Business
Do you remember what used to call this location in Saugerties, New York home?
Longtime Saugerties residents will probably be able to identify what used to be here rather quickly but for folks that are new to the area it might take a little longer to figure it out. Let us help with that!
What Was This Building in Saugerties, NY?
That question was recently posted in a Saugerties community Facebook group and after reading some of the comments I learned a few things about the building that I had no idea about. Let's start with what I do know...LOL! I do know that at one time this building was home to a McDonald's and for many years it wasn't just a regular McDonald's it was one of the fancy locations that had a Play Place.
McDonald's in Saugerties, NY
I'm not sure how long the building that sits at 3123 Route 9W in Saugerties was a McDonald's but I do know that it was built in 1972 and many lifelong residents enjoyed numerous parties that involved playing in the ball pit, climbing on the jungle gym and of course the McDonalds birthday cake!! The exact date the location closed is unclear but I do think it closed sometime around 2015, and since it closed I don't think any other businesses attempted to open at the location, which has many residents wondering why.
Why is the Building Still Vacant?
One comment in the community group shared one reason it might still be vacant saying, "Old owners wouldn't allow any fast food to move in there." Unsure if that was true or not I looked up the real estate listing on RE/MAX and discovered that the owners are leasing the building and not selling it with the monthly rent starting at $4000. The listing reads,
"Wonderful high visibility opportunity awaits-high traffic count- 9W-so many space uses-Brew Pub-Wood fired Pizza-Bakery-Tavern -Butcher Shop- Daycare- General Retail- Laundromat. $4000.00 per month, triple net. (Taxes, Maintenance & Insurance). Commercial Corner property. 2500 square foot building on 1.5 Acres complete with 43 parking spaces. Easy to show. Cannot be a chain restaurant - no drive-thru."

Saugerties Wants These Businesses to Move in!
Many of the residents that commented on the post stated what they would like to see move in with all of the places the Hudson Valley lacks being mentioned including, Chick-fil-A, White Castle, Hooter, and IHOP. Obviously, under the current agreement, none of those would be allowed to move in today but once the current lease structure expires in a few years they might be possible.
A while back we told you that Saugerties was hoping that a Cracker Barrel would open in the area sometime soon. Could that work? If you could pick anything to open in that former McDonald's location what would you choose? Let us know through our station app above and to view the full listing check out the RE/MAX Benchmark Realty Group online here.
