Breathtaking Tall Ship Will Dock in the Hudson Valley This August
The Hudson River Maritime Museum has announced that 141-foot replica of a 1638 Swedish ship will be coming to the Hudson Valley.
The Kalmar Nyckel was originally a Dutch-built armed merchant ship that was used to carry Swedish settlers to North America in early 1600s. Its purpose was to help establish the colony of New Sweden right here in America. This replica built in 1997 doesn't come from Sweden, however. It was originally launched in Wilmington, Delaware in 1997. The ship has been used ever since as a "floating classroom" by the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation.
The tall ship is scheduled to sail the Hudson River in August, stopping for five days in Kingston. During her visit, the Kalmar Nyckel staff will host deck tours, sailing trips and lectures.
