Anti-Hunger Organization to Move into Once Popular Beacon, NY Restaurant
A women-run food justice, anti-hunger organization is calling a once popular dining destination home.
What Happened to Mary Kelly's in Beacon, NY?
Years ago, Lamplight Street in Beacon, New York was a top destination for those looking to grab a bite to eat thanks to Mary Kelly's Restaurant. The bar was what dreams were made of when you thought of authentic Irish bars. Many St. Patrick's Day celebrations were had in the restaurant that looked like a castle.
Mary Kelly's went through a name change a few years ago and was known as Chateau Beacon, but that didn't last too long. Judging from their Facebook page, they must have closed their doors in March 2016 as that was the last post about any sort of happenings at the restaurant.
Since then, the large castle-like building has sat untouched and abandoned. However, it looks as though that is about to change.
Anti-Hunger Organization Moves to Lamplight Street in Beacon
Local non-profit Fareground Food + Community shared the big news on their Facebook page last week. The anti-hunger organization is moving to a new location in Beacon, New York. On Facebook, they write:
We are moving up the road in Beacon to 37 Lamplight Street (formerly Mary Kelly’s Restaurant). We are so thrilled to share this lovely spot with our friends and long-time neighbors, the congregation of Star of Bethlehem Church.
The Star of Bethlehem Church has purchased the old Mary Kelly's location and will be "transforming the former restaurant into their sanctuary." Fareground's home base will be located in the basement of the 37 Lamplight Street location.
What is Fareground Food + Community?
According to their website, Fareground is a women-run food justice, anti-hunter organization "dedicated to nourishing the community by operating free marketplaces, community fridges, tiny food pantries, and other programs to distribute fresh and prepared foods."
Their goal is to provide local, organic food whenever possible, working with local farms and other organizations "to secure donations or affordable food." They look to promote "necessary changes to build local food security."
