Agriculture in The Classroom: Adopt a Calf Program Dutchess County

The Dutchess County Fair Facebook page shared a new program that is coming to classrooms across the county this year.

It's called the Adopt a Calf Program.

The new program was launched with the Dutchess County Agricultural Society as a component to their educational programs that connect "classrooms with local farmers to bring agriculture alive."

Dutchess County Classrooms Adopt a Dairy Calf

The Adopt a Calf Program is being introduced this year with the support of Stormfield Swiss Farm in Wappingers Falls.

Stormfield Swiss Farm is owned by the Lawrence Family who are the 2025 Dutchess County Farm Family of the Year 2025.

This program invites local Dutchess County classrooms to "adopt" a dairy calf. The students will then follow the calves "growth through the school year."

Classrooms that take part in the program will receive an introduction video shortly after the calf is born and "can write back to the farmers with questions that will be answered in future video or photo updates."

The Dutchess County Fair explains more about the program writing:

Each update provides age-appropriate educational materials that focus on animal care, nutrition, and the role that agriculture plays in everyday life.
Then, at the end of the school year, the classrooms calf will visit the school and students will be able to interact with the calf and the farmer in person which we're sure will be a highlight for the students.
If you know a classroom that is interested in participating with the Adopt a Calf Program they can contact Cassie Messina by email atdcasaged@dutchessfair.com or by phone at (914) 774-1236.
