An accident involving five different vehicles brought the Thursday morning commute to a halt on the eastbound side of Interstate 84 in Orange County, NY.

The morning commute was much longer for numerous drivers Thursday after a multi-vehicle accident forced officials to temporarily close all lanes on the eastbound side of I-84, leading many to seek an alternate route to cross the Hudson River.

Multi-Vehicle Accident Temporally Closes I-84

According to numerous reports, it all started on Thursday, January 15th, 2026, at approximately 6:30 a.m., when the Middle Hope Fire Department (MHFD) was called to respond to a multi-vehicle accident, with a possible rollover on I-84 east, just west of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge.

MHFD said that while responding to the crash, they were notified that one of the subjects involved in the accident was trapped in one of the vehicles.

Upon arrival, MHFD reported that a total of five vehicles were involved (pictures below), and that the subject, who was trapped inside a vehicle, was assisted out of the vehicle by other first responders before the fire department's arrival.

Multiple People Injured in Crash on I-84

MHFD didn't reveal any of the names of the people involved or what led to the accident, but did say that multiple people were evaluated at the scene and some were transported by Town of Newburgh Emergency Medical Services to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Accident Clean-up

All eastbound lanes on I-84 were temporarily shut down while first responders tended to the injured and removed debris that was scattered across multiple lanes. All Lanes remained closed for about an hour, with traffic backed up for miles.

It could have been much worse, but thankfully, due to the quick thinking of officials on the scene, they were able use a New York State Bridge Authority forklift to remove one of the vehicles to the side of the road so that two lanes of traffic could resume.

The accident scene was cleared, and traffic began to ease shortly after 8 a.m.

Leave Room for First Responders

Following the accident, the MHFD reminded drivers to always remember to leave a lane of travel for responding emergency vehicles when possible.

"During this incident, there were several fire and police apparatus unable to make the scene due to heavy traffic, said MHFD. "These members were required to park the vehicles on 9W and walk up the ramp to the incident with heavy gear and equipment."
