Orange County Sheriff Investigates Animal Abuse Allegations

The Orange County Sheriff's Office shared a press release this week regarding an investigation in the Town of Warwick.

In the press release we learned the investigation spanned multiple days and resulted in "the removal of various domestic and exotic animals living in unsanitary and unhealthy conditions."

According to the statement, the case originate back in 2024 with a "complaint filed regarding animal abuse at a residence on Old Dutch Hollow Road in the Town of Warwick."

The original complaint states that 106 animals were seized "due to similar unsafe and unsanitary conditions."

Investigators who went to serve the warrant detected a strong odor of animal urine and feces emanating from the residence."

Additionally, the investigators "observed numerous cages stacked inside, prompting them to obtain a search warrant for the residence." This lead to a search warrant being issued.

On September 17th a total of 66 animals were taken in, including the following:

Rabbit
Geese
Parrots
a Raccoon
Tortoises
Prairie Dogs
a Starling
Guinea Pigs
Hedgehogs
Hamsters
Ferrets
Degus
a Goat
Bearded Dragons
Snake
Hermit Crab
Tarantula
Peacocks
Wallaby
Dogs
Ducks
Cats

Then on September 19th, a second search warrant was executed and 18 more animals were taken in including hens, roosters, and pigs."

The press release goes on to add that the Warwick Valley Humane Society Animal Nation were both thanked by the Orange County Sheriffs Office and adds that the animals are being "safeguarded and provided with veterinary care."

Orange County Sheriff Paul Arteta. states "This case highlights the importance of community partnerships in combating animal neglect" adding:

"The dedication of the Warwick Valley Humane Society and Animal Nation allowed us to act swiftly and humanely, giving these animals a chance at recovery."

Unfortauntely, there are still several animals missing from the initial investigation. An emu, swan, 2 white geese and 4 peafowl were missing from the property.
