According to the Waterbury Police Department, officers responded to Lakewood Park just before 4:00 AM late Saturday night / early Sunday morning (August 15) in the area of Massachusetts Avenue after receiving a report from a utility worker who had be working to fix a nearby power outage. At the time, the utility worker told dispatch that a car was completely submerged under water in the park's lake.

Due to the nature of the crash on Waterbury's Lakewood Rd., the Region 5 Dive Team was called to the scene and quickly located an unresponsive female inside of a black Honda Civic, who police identified on Monday (August 16) as 22-year-old Yamiles Vazquez of Waterbury. At that point, local EMS then transported the victim to a nearby hospital, where she was unfortunately pronounced deceased. Police say there were no other victims involved with the crash.

At the time of this writing, the tragic incident is being investigated by the Waterbury Police Department's Crash Reconstruction Unit, as they work to the cause of Vazquez's crash and how her car ended up being submerged in Lakewood Lake.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or perhaps has any information that can assist in determining its cause is asked to contact the Waterbury Police Department at 203-346-3975 as soon as possible.

This is a developing story and we'll be sure to keep you updated as more information rolls in.
