The organizers of the original Woodstock 1969 Festival announced the time and location for the 50th anniversary celebration. The festival will take place in Upstate New York but well outside the Hudson Valley in Watkins Glen. The three-day celebration is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 16 through Sunday, Aug. 18--the same weekend as the 50th anniversary event planned at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, which is the site of the original 1969 schedule. Bethel Woods Center for the Arts and Woodstock Ventures--the company formed by original festival organizers, are not affiliated.

Michael Lang, co-founder of the Woodstock 1969 festival, announced the details of the 50th anniversary celebration in a press release Wednesday.

"It's time to put the speculation to rest and officially announce that Woodstock 50 is happening," Lang said in the release. "The original festival in '69 was a reaction by the youth of the time to the causes we felt compelled to fight for... Today, we're experiencing similar disconnects in our country, and one thing we've learned is that music has the power to bring people together."

In December, Lang said that Bethel Woods didn't have the capacity to host the anniversary celebration Woodstock Ventures was planning. He praised the cultural center's plans to commemorate the 50th anniversary in 2019.

Neither Woodstock Ventures nor Bethel Woods Center For the Arts have announced line-ups for their respective festivals.
