Woman Rescued After 60 Foot Fall At Minnewaska

A 30 year-old woman is lucky to be alive after falling 60 feet Saturday afternoon. The Daily Freeman says the unidentified woman and a friend were hiking on the Gertrude’s Nose Trail when she fell into a crevice.

Park rangers and Kingston firefighters worked diligently to save the woman. However, the rescue did not sound like an easy task at all. According to the Kingston Fire Chief, the woman was stuck in the crevice for over four hours.

The call came in at 11:35. We didn’t get her out until 4 or 4:30.
We mostly assisted the rangers with the extraction....not a walk in the park. They were quite a ways back.

According to sources, the rescuers had to get a four-wheel drive vehicle back on a carriage path just so they could get to her. The woman was described as conscious and alert when rescuers finally got to her. But their work was not done yet. It still took the rescuers another 45 minutes to get her to the edge of the trail.

The Freeman reports that the woman was taken by a rescue helicopter to the ranger station, and then taken by ambulance to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital. She is said to have suffered a laceration to the head, along with back and left ankle pain.
