In a statement addressed to "the Long Gray Line and all USMA Supporters" officials at West Point announced a huge change to their historic mission statement.

Duty, Honor, Country No More. West Point Changes Mission Statement

Back in 1998, West Point added the motto "Duty, Honor, Country" to its mission statement. Since then, those words have become the foundation of the United States Military Academy at West Point. And, according to a press release, it will stay that way.

These three hallowed words are the hallmark of the cadet experience and bind the Long Gray Line together across our great history.

However, in said press release which was shared earlier this week, West Point officials explained that over the past year and a half, some work has been done behind the scenes.

Leaders from across West Point and external stakeholders reviewed West Point's "vision, mission, and strategy to serve this purpose." With that, they decided that a change in the mission statement is what was needed.

West Point Approves New Mission Statement

West Point writes "Our responsibility to produce leaders to fight and win our nation's wars requires us to assess ourselves regularly."

The press release continues with West Point stating "We believe our mission binds the Academy to the Army - the Army in which our cadets will serve. The new West Point Mission Statement is as follows:

To build, educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets to be commissioned leaders of character committed to the Army Values and ready for a lifetime of service to the Army and Nation.

According to the press release both the Secretary of the Army and Army Chief of Staff approve the recommended change.

The full statement can be found online at WestPoint.edu.
