It feels like spring is creeping in throughout New York State, however winter is still lingering.

Recently, our friends in Central New York felt the remnants of winter with lake effect snow.

What is Lake Effect Snow?

Here in the Hudson Valley, Lake Effect snow is not something we are experienced with during the winter months. However, our friends up north in the Great Lakes region experience it quite often.

According to NOAA, Lake Effect Snow is formed when "cold, below-freezing air passes over a lake’s warmer waters. This causes some lake water to evaporate and warm the air. Then, the moist air moves away from the lake. After cooling, the air dumps its moisture on the ground, potentially becoming snow."

They also add that "Buffalo is one of the snowiest cities in the country." Lake Effect snow tends to be heavy and comes down faster than your run of the mill snow storm.

Watch As Central, NY Fire Department Collapses

A recent lake effect snow storm in Oneida County, New York caused major damage to a local volunteer Fire Department.

Fox Weather is reporting that the lake effect snow fell in Barneveld, New York between February 14th and February 19th. Throughout that time several feet of snow piled up across the region.

The snow piled up on the rooftop of the Barneveld Volunteer Fire Department and while the firefighters were working on clearing the snow, the roof had other plans.

Thankfully, no one was injured.

Officials from the fire department told Fox Weather "While some of our crews were removing snow from the roof other members started coming up with a plan to start shoring up the structure."

They add:

"After a short time it was determined that the building had become too unstable, and our members were removed from the area and the building collapsed a short time later."
