Free Nature Bus Returns to Ulster County for Summer 2026

If you've been looking for a way to get outside and explore some of the Hudson Valley's most beautiful destinations without worrying about parking, gas, or admission fees, Ulster County has some great news.

The popular Nature Bus is back for the 2026 season, offering residents and visitors free transportation and free admission to some of the county's most scenic parks, preserves, and outdoor attractions.

It's no secret that Ulster County is home to some of New York State's most breathtaking landscapes. From the dramatic cliffs and waterfalls at Minnewaska to the stunning views found along the Ashokan Rail Trail and the Walkway Over the Hudson, there is no shortage of places to explore. The county is also home to destinations like Sam's Point, the Catskills Visitor Center, and countless hiking trails that attract outdoor enthusiasts from across New York.

Now, thanks to the return of the Nature Bus, getting to some of those destinations is easier than ever.

The free service will operate every Saturday from June through September and features two alternating routes designed to connect residents with some of Ulster County's most popular outdoor destinations.

The Ridge Route runs between New Paltz and Ellenville and includes stops at both the Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park, giving hikers, cyclists, and nature lovers easy access to two of the region's most popular outdoor recreation areas.

The River Route connects Kingston with several waterfront and nature destinations, including Sojourner Truth State Park, Kingston Point Beach, Black Creek Preserve in Esopus, and the Walkway Over the Hudson.

Who Can Use the Nature Bus?

County officials say the program is designed for people of all ages and abilities. The buses are also equipped with bike racks, making it easy for cyclists to bring their bikes along for the ride.
