
2 Arrested After Abandoned Silo Rescue in Catskill
Rescue Crews Help Find Victim in Empty NY Silo
Earlier this week, the the Cedar Grove Fire Company shared on social media that the Catskill Fire District was called to the Lehigh Cement Plant in Catskill on Friday, August 1st around 10:30 pm.
At the scene first responders learned that their victim had fallen 150 feet into an abandoned cement silo.
The Cedar Grove Fire Company explained the rescue process which included utilizing a ropes system to get to the fallen victim. They explain that "due to the mechanism of injuries" medivac was requested.

In the Facebook statement they add:
Crews from Rescue 3, the Twin Cloves Tech Rescue Team, and City of Kingston Fire, arrived on scene and established a rope system utilizing a terradapter with a main and belay system.
A first responder on sight then repelled "approximately 120' down the silo to access the patient."
The patient was reported to have minor injuries.
More Details Emerge About Victims in Catskill Silo Rescue
In a press release from the New York State Police we are learning more details about what happened at the Lehigh Cement Plant in Catskill.
According to the press release, 21-year-old Lucas Marrello of Cambridge New York and Luke Apy, 23, of Malta New York visited the abandoned silos to "camp out and explore the area."
The two men "illegally entered the property after breaching a perimeter fence." After they got inside, they then "climbed to the top of one of the cement silos." That's when Apy "removed a piece of plywood covering an opening and subsequently fell approximately 100 feet into the silo."
The press release goes on to add that after the fall "Apy was conscious and alert but ws unable to exit the silo."
2 Arrested After Lehigh Cement Plant Silo Rescue
As stated earlier, emergency personnel was called in to help locate and extract Apy. However after the rescue, things took a turn for both men.
Apy was evaluated and taken to Albany Medical Center for further treatment. At the scene Marrello was arrested and charged with Criminal Trespass in the 3rd Degree, which is a class B misdemeanor.
Then on August 3rd, Apy reported to State Police Catskill where he was "arrested and processed for Criminal Trespass 3rd Degree, a Class B misdemeanor."
The 2 were both released on appearance tickets and are to return to the Town of Catskill Court on September 4th, 2025.
