Tragic Accident Kills Several Horses on Upstate New York Road

Several horses have died in a tragic accident involving a tractor-trailer in Upstate New York.

An early morning accident involving a tractor-trailer has resulted in the death of several horses that reportedly wandered into the roadway on Saturday, according to WTEN.

Horses Killed in Tractor-Trailer Accident in Upstate New York

The New York State Police are reporting that three horses have died after they were struck by a tractor trailer in Greenwich, NY on Saturday, January 31st, 2026. Police said the accident, which occurred just before 6:30 a.m. on a section of New York State Route 40, involved horses that escaped from a nearby area.

Police told WTEN that the horses had repordtly escaped from a nearby fenced in area in Washington County, New York, and wandered into the roadway where they were struck by a tractor trailer truck. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the crash but tragically all three of the horses involved in the accident passed away as a result of their injuries.

Sadly, this isn't the first crash this year that has killed a horse.

Horse Pulling Amish Buggy Killed in Otsego County, NY

Last month the New York State Police reported that a horse was killed after a pickup truck crashed into an Amish buggy in Pittsfield, Otsego County, NY according to CNY Central. Police said the accident, which occurred around 3:18 p.m. on January 8th, 2026, involved an Amish buggy and a Ford pickup truck, both travelling in the same direction on County Highway 13.

The police investigation revealed that the driver of pickup truck drifted right on the roadway and struck the horse which was pulling the buggy which had four kids on board. Thankfully, the four children in the buggy, ages 14, 12, 9 and 7 years old, only suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Sadly, the horse died as a result of it injuries.
