Town of Ulster Police Chief to be Named in August
Lt. Kyle Berardi was promoted to police chief in August 2016. He was moved into the position after previous police chief Anthony Cruise retired in 2015 due to a cancer diagnosis. Cruise passed away in December 2016. After Cruise passed away Lt. J.P. Gramoglia was the officer in charge of the Town of Ulster police department, which is made up of 24 full time and 10 part time officers.
Ulster town supervisor James Quigley explained to the Daily Freeman that Lt. Berardi has to hold the rank of lieutenant for a year before he can be officially moved into the position as police chief. Quigley continued by explaining that Lt. Berardi had completed the Civil Service Exam needed for the position, but the experience requirement he has not met yet. In August Berardi's name will be put before the town board for consideration for the police chief position. The board will also see three other candidates who are qualified for the position.
Berardi started as a police officer with the Rosendale and Shandaken police department and has spent 15 years with the Town of Ulster Police department.
