If you own a car and have it legally registered in New York you already know that every two years you need to reregister it so the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) can make sure the vehicle is safe and so they can collect taxes and fees. Each time you register a vehicle the DMV also gives owners the option to upgrade their license plates to custom plates for an extra fee.

Personally, I always go with the cheapest option and honestly, I've never looked at how many different license plate options are available in New York. That might be why I was surprised to see that New York offers over 200 different custom license plate designs.

In 2024, the New York DMV offered a selection of 200+ different custom license plate designs for interested vehicle owners. The designs include themes that range from significant dates in history, special causes, hobbies, zodiac signs, sports teams, and many more, but which custom plate was the most popular in New York in 2024?

Most Popular Custom License Plates in New York 2024

According to the DMV the top 10 custom plates that vehicle owners purchased in 2024 start with one of the biggest names in NASCAR history, the Dale Earnhardt Memorial NASCAR plate was purchased by 316 buyers in 2024 grabbing the #10 spot followed by the Volunteer Firefighters plate (#9) selling 359 plates last year. NASCAR enthusiasts (#8), Buffalo Bills fans (#7), Marine Corps Veterans (#6), and a general Veteran plate (#5), filled the first 5 spots on the 2024 list.

There was a tie for third and fourth place with the New York City regional plate (#4) and the Medical Doctor plate (#3) each selling 798 plates in 2024. The second most sold plate in 2024 went to the Long Island regional plate, which sold 930 units in 2024.

The number one spot went to the Army Veteran plates (#1) which sold 1,673 plates in 2024.
