The History of The Egg in Albany, New York

Growing up, I went on many trips to the Capital Region for fun with my family and for school trips.

Every visit I would look at The Egg and think it was a UFO (it probably had something to do with watching Men in Black so much in the 90s). I didn't realize how historic the oddly shaped building was.

The Egg was built in The Empire State Plaza back in 1966 and opened in 1978. According to The Egg website, Wallace Harrison designed the structure that "features a distinct architectural style with a curved exterior, no straight lines, and a deep reinforced concrete stem for support."

There are 2 theaters within The Egg, The Lewis A. Swyer Theater that has 450 seats and the Kitty Carlisle Hart Theater that sits 982 people.

Artist like Cheap Trick, Goo Goo Dolls and Pat Benatar and comedians like Weird Al Yankovic, Hannibal Buress and Heather McMahan have all performed at The Egg.

Now, The Egg is closed...temporarily.

The Egg To Undergo Major Renovations

For the time being, The Egg will be closed. But, for good reason. The Egg is currently undergoing major renovations.

According to The New York State Office of General Services, construction is under way at the iconic performing arts center. Renovations will "help transform one of the Capital Region’s most iconic performing arts centers into a modern, safe, and more accessible venue."

The Egg will reopen in 2026.

They add:

This renovation marks an #egg-citing new chapter for the Empire State Plaza.

Be a Part of The New Updates at The Egg With Seat Inscription

Want to be a part of the new and improved Egg in Albany?

They are currently taking donations to be a part of "The Egg’s inaugural Seat Naming Campaign."

Those who donate will have a "plaque with your personalized engraving" on a "brand new seat as a part of this exciting legacy."

Naming a seat will definitely cost you. $1,000 and $500 donors may name a seat at the Kitty Carlisle Hart Theater or Lewis A. Swyer Theater. These plaques will "remain in place for 10 or 5 years" unless they are renewed.
