As the Fourth of July Weekend approaches we can expect celebrations to kick-off now through next week. One of the favorites that a lot of us add to our back yard celebrations is fireworks. Human firework safety is very important but so is keeping our pets safe during firework displays. Last year my husband and I left the house to attend a friends party and returned home to my dog hiding in our spare bathroom behind the toilet. It hadn't occurred to us to ask the neighbors what their plans were for fireworks and needless to say our dog attended a better show that we did unfortunately she is not a fan of pyrotechnics.

This year before we head out of the house to attend one of the area fireworks displays I plan to check with my neighbors about their plans and then follow some of the helpful hints that Marie Carter of Country Living Magazine has spelled out in the July online issue of Country Living. Marie offers 9 great ways to help your dog cope with fireworks. I might also add a 10th, don't bring your dog to the display. I really don't think they enjoy the noise and light show as much as us humans. Dogs staying home with some of Marie's suggestions is how I would play it.
