Just in time for Shark Week, drone footage has captured an intense shark feeding frenzy off of a popular New York vacation destination.
Did You Know There Are 13 Shark Species in NYS?
In honor of Shark Week's 37th season, here are some New York Shark facts.
There are 13 types of sharks, swimming around New York waters. They include:
Atlantic Blacktip, Basking Shark, Blue Shark, Common Thresher Shark, Dusky Shark, Sand Tiger Shark, Sandbar SHark, Shortfin Mako Shark, Smooth Dogfish, Smooth Hammerhead Shark, Spinner Shark, Spiny Dog Fish and White Shark.
The NYS DEC writes:
Sharks have existed in New York's marine waters for millions of years. They are apex predators, which means they are at the top of the food chain and have few natural predators.
They also add "Sharks play a vital role in keeping our ocean healthy by regulating and maintaining the balance of intricate marine ecosystems."
Who knew Sharks were so important to the ecosystem here in New York.
Hudson Valley Woman Attacked by Shark at Popular NY Beach
Towards the end of June 2025, a Sullivan County woman had a painful encounter with a shark at a popular New York beach.
Hudson Valley Post reports that the woman was bitten by a shark in "waist-level water" "while swimming at Jones Beach in Nassau County, Long Island."
After the attack, NYS official worked quickly to provide extra security at state beaches.

In a press release Gov. Kathy Hochul said:
“We are continuing to strengthen our shark surveillance capabilities and safety tactics at these beaches to help protect these treasured summertime traditions. I encourage all beachgoers to stay safe, stay alert and always follow the direction of lifeguards and park staff."
Since then, there have been no shark attacks at New York beaches. With that being said, there have been some sightings.

WATCH: Shark Feeding Frenzy at New York's Fire Island
On July 20th, 2025, ABC News took to social media to share a intense video of a recent shark feeding off of Fire Island in New York.
Fire Island is a popular vacation destination this time of year. ABC News writes "Drone footage captured sharks feasting on bunker fish this week off the coast of New York's Fire Island."
While seeing this visual may be a bit overwhelming, it's a common occurrence in NY waters. Last year the DEC shared the following video of another feeding frenzy which looks a lot like the video above:
