A serious multi-vehicle accident involving a school bus sent numerous people to the hospital including 11 middle school students.

A section of Route 9 in Hyde Park, New York was closed for hours as first responders attempted to sort out what led to a four-vehicle accident that happened shortly after 3 p.m. on Tuesday, January 14th.

Multi-Vehicle Accident in Hyde Park, NY

The accident, which occurred in the area of 4699 Albany Post Rd and Scenic Drive sent several people, including 11 Hyde Park School District children to the hospital according to a Town of Hyde Park Police Department press release. At 3:17 p.m. Hyde Park officers were dispatched to a four-vehicle personal injury auto accident involving a school bus and upon arrival began a preliminary investigation which revealed that the collision involved a Honda Accord operated by Lynne M. Bondi, a 61-year-old woman from Wingdale, and a Hyundai, operated by Joshua Ortiz, a 28-year-old man from Poughkeepsie who were both traveling southbound on State Route 9.

It also involved a Dodge Ram Pickup, driven by Justin A. Angier, a 41-year-old man from Red Hook, who was also traveling southbound when he was reportedly distracted by something inside his truck and allegedly took his eyes off the road. When he redirected his attention to the road, his vehicle rear-ended the Hyundai, pushing it into the northbound lane and causing it to strike a Hyde Park Central School District bus operated by Brandy Gilleo, a 45-year-old woman from Hyde Park.

Following the collision with the Hyundai, the Dodge Ram continued southbound on Route 9 and struck the Honda Accord, causing it to veer off the roadway and crash into a nearby residential fence according to police. Joshua Ortiz was trapped in his vehicle and had to be extricated by the Hyde Park Fire Department; he sustained serious injuries and was transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital by Northern Dutchess Paramedics. Lynne Bondi was taken to Vassar Hospital for evaluation. Justin Angier reported no injuries and didn't go to the hospital.

School Bus Accident Sends Children to Hospital

Shortly after the accident Hyde Park Central School Superintendent Pedro Roman, arrived at the scene with a team of school personnel to assist the 11 students and one aide who were on the bus before they were transported to Poughkeepsie hospitals for evaluation. The students were reportedly from the Haviland Middle School.

This is an ongoing investigation.
