Flashback: Giant Styrofoam Head Found in Poughkeepsie, New York
One of my favorite social media perks is definitely the "Memories" feature on Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.
While it didn't pop up on my personal social media account, NPR shared a memory of a unique find in the Hudson River by the Marist Crew team.
Remember When a Giant Floating Head Was Found in the Hudson River?
Back on April 22nd, 2013 the Marist University (then, College) crew team came upon something strange while on the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie, New York...
A large Styrofoam head.
NBC News spoke with Greg Cannon, a spokesperson for Marist at the time, Cannon explained "The coach, who is in a motorboat, took a quick spin out and investigated it, and was as baffled as anyone by what he saw."
You can't blame him, reports state that the head was about 7 feet tall and 5 feet wide and extremely heavy as it was waterlogged. Cannon added:
Beacause it was a navigation hazard, he felt it was his duty to haul it in. It took about 10 members of his team to haul it in."
Once the head made it to land, students observed that the head was made of foam at the core, but was covered in fiberglass and had metal rods inside.
Who Did The Floating Hudson River Head Belong To?
The mystery has yet to be solved at who the Styrofoam head belongs to.
Shortly after the head was found in the Hudson River a theater company down south dispelled rumor's that it belonged to them.
The Barter Theatre, which is the State Theatre of Virginia, issued a statement saying while they did have a similar statue, theirs was still in place and ready for their performance of Les Miserables opening May 18, 2013.
There were also some rumors that the head was part of a Mardi Gras Float and some how ended up in the Hudson River.
As of today, there are still no answers as to who the giant Styrofoam head belonged too. If you have any information we would LOVE to hear from you.
