Travelling on Route 17 just got a little easier and safer, according to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. The Governor today announced the completion of the $75 million project that reconstructed Exit 122 on New York State Route 17 in the town of Wallkill.

According to the Governor's press release, the exit and entrance approaches to Route 17 at exit 122 have been redesigned as well as realigning East Main Street and Crystal Run Road in Wallkill. This project was designed to address critical safety and operational deficiencies on State Route 17 so that national requirements would be met to upgrade Route 17 to interstate standards.

Workers constructed a new Main Street bridge and installed a reinforced concrete tunnel to move traffic from Interstate 84 eastbound to Route 17 eastbound and carry Route 17 eastbound traffic to local roads. In addition, the bridge on Route 17 over Interstate 84 has been repaired as well as the installation of new traffic signals and street lights for the length of the project.

According to the office of the Governor, an estimated 994 jobs were created related to this project which also added an access road and parking area for a canoe launch to the Wallkill River. In addition, a newly constructed 107-space park and ride lot was created for bus services and will provide thousands of Orange County commuters with car-pooling opportunities.
