4 Firefighters Treated as New Details Emerge From Massive Poughkeepsie Psych Center Fire

The Fairview Fire District has released a statement with more details and updates regarding the massive fire at the Hudson River Psychiatric Center in Poughkeepsie.

More details are being shared about the massive fire at the historic Hudson River Psychiatric Center.

The Fair View Fire District released an official statement on June 4th, 2026, a day after a blaze ripped through the abandoned building in Poughkeepsie.

In a press release shared on social media the Fair View Fire District explains that while the "main body of the fire has been contained" crews remained at the site to manage "localized hotspots."

The press release gave more information to the public about the blaze. The Fairview Fire District was dispatched to 120 Hudson View Drive in Poughkeepsie at 11:19 am on Wednesday, June 3rd, 2026.

The first to arrive on the scene got there in under 90 seconds. It was a fast moving fire, the press release details:

As crews successfully moved to place the initial building fire under control, units discovered a second, separate fire rapidly developing in the northeast wing of the massive HRPC main administration building.

 

4 Firefighters Treated After Knocking Down Poughkeepsie Blaze

In the press release the Fair View Fire District adds that the fire "spread aggressively through the main-building."

Then the flames consumed "the rear, extending across the east and southeast sides, tearing through the south wings, and ultimately compromising the front section of the facility, which had recently been undergoing commercial renovations." 

Crews on-site were able to manage several "secondary brush and grass fires" which were sparked by the initial fire.

As the first reports came in, we heard that there were no injuries. However the Fair View Fire District has shared that there were 4 firefighters that were treated on and off site.

In the statement they share "A total of four firefighters required medical evaluation."

2 firefighters were checked on-scene and cleared, another 2 were "transported to local hospitals for treatment released to head exhaustion and dehydration." They are expected to recover.

At this time no civilian injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is still unknown, but it is under investigation by police and arson K9 units.

Linger Smoke Worries Local Dutchess County Residents

A fire this big is of course going to generate a lot of smoke.

Those who live in and around the area of the blaze have said that their properties have been covered in smoke and ash.

One comment in a Facebook page said that they live in the area of Violet Avenue and after the fire "around 9(PM) or so it was raining dust and smoke particles."

According to the Fair View Fire Department's statement explained that an official NYS DEC air monitor "recorded slightly elevated readings" but:

the levels remain well within the safe reference range. General Air Quality Index AQ readings for the area remain in the yellow category, which indicates acceptable air quality.

With that being said, individuals who are sensitive to air pollution or with pre-existing respirator medical issues should limit their outdoor activity.
