A domestic incident turned deadly in Amenia after a 37-year-old male with a rifle turned the gun on himself after a lengthy standoff with police.

On Friday night, at approximately 10:43 pm, the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on Old Route 22 in the Town of Amenia for a 911 call reporting a domestic dispute involving a male subject in possession of a firearm. While responding to the incident, Dutchess County 911 dispatchers updated deputies that the male had discharged the firearm.

Department spokesperson Lt. Shawn Castano said responding deputies located the man outside of the home armed with a rifle. Deputies ordered the male to drop his rifle but he refused to comply with multiple orders given by police.

Patrol deputies along with members of the Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services Unit, Detective Bureau, and New York State Police maintained a perimeter while Sheriff’s Office Crisis Negotiators attempted to convince the male to drop his rifle and surrender.

After a lengthy standoff, about an hour and a half into negotiations, the 37-year-old male fatally shot himself in the roadway in front of officers.

No one else was injured as a result of this incident.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the New York State Police, Dutchess County Medical Examiner’s Office, Wassaic Fire Department and Town of Amenia Ambulance.

The investigation into this matter is ongoing. Additional information may be released at a later time.
