Local police are looking for answers regarding a dog that was abandoned in Dutchess County.

Dog Left Tied to Pole in Poughkeepsie, New York

The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department and their Animal Control organization are hoping the public can help identifying an individual who left a dog tied up outside of a local animal rescue.

According to a post from Animal Control Officer Cress the dog was left tied up to a pole outside of Hudson Valley Animal Rescue in Poughkeepsie. In a statement to social media ACO Cress explains "Surveillance video shows an unknown individual tying the dog to the pole before leaving the area."

They add that the individual was:

"wearing a black hoodie with the hood up and a face mask concealing their identity.

Do You Have Any Information About This Dog?

Local law enforcement is hoping that they can track down the owner of this pup.

On social media ACO Cress shares that the dog was "found wearing a pink shirt and gold necklace." Engraved into the necklace, which is crown shaped, are the words "Mama's Princess."

The other side of the necklace is decorated with a gold bow and a heart with small gems.

The statement from ACO Cress goes on to add "Authorities are asking anyone who may have information regarding the identity of the dog’s owner or the individual seen in the video to please come forward."

Are There Dog Abandonment Laws in New York?

While we don't know the reason behind why this dog was abandoned in Poughkeepsie, there are laws when it comes to such acts.

According to the New York State Senate website:

Under New York State Agriculture and Markets Law (§ 355), abandoning a dog or leaving it to die in a public place is a misdemeanor.

Convictions for animal abandonment can "result in up to one year in prison, fine up to $1,000, or both." The New York State Senate adds "This law applies to owners, possessors, or anyone with custody of the animal."
