Phil Vassar has written literally hundreds of songs: In addition to his own hits, such as "Carlene," "In a Real Love," "Six-Pack Summer" and "Last Day of My Life," among others, the tunesmith has also written hits for artists including Tim McGraw, David Nail, Kenny Chesney, Jo Dee Messina and Alan Jackson, just to name a few. But for all of the music he has written, the singer-songwriter says that his best material might still be ahead of him.

"I’ve written so many songs over the years," Vassar tells The Boot. "I love the stuff I’m writing now. I’m excited about what I’m going to write."

Time away from the writing room has helped re-energize Vassar.

"The last couple years have been a blur, between writing and recording and all that stuff, so I’ve really taken some time off from that," he adds. "... I’m excited about getting back in our room and creating something; it’s really fun. Being on stage is amazing -- it’s a fun part and payoff for what we do -- but I do like to really get in and make music."

Vassar has spent much of the last few years on the road, even though his last studio album, Traveling Circus, was released in 2009. It's his loyalty to his fans -- and their loyalty to him -- that propels Vassar to keep performing all over the country.

"I like people. I like talking, and I like conversations. I love my family and my friends, my kids. I like that stuff," Vassar maintains. "I don’t go out and party. I’m not like that; that’s not my thing. But I do value my friendships ... I like to sign autographs and do that kind of stuff."
