
Permit Needed To Visit Super Popular Grahamsville, NY Blue Swimming Hole
Looking to take a dip in a unique swimming hole this summer? You're in luck because the Hudson Valley is home to a few, but you're going to need a permit to get there.
Did You Know The Hudson Valley is Home to a Unique Blue Hole?
Have you ever heard of a blue hole? According to Wikipedia a blue hole is " a large, underwater sinkhole, typically found in limestone or other carbonate rock formations."
And wouldn't you know it, we have one right here in our own backyard. It's called Peekamoose Blue Hole and it's located in the Sundown Wild Forest in Grahamsville, New York in Sullivan County.

The New York State Department Of Environmental Conservation explains what the Peekamoose Blue Hole is made up of in more detail on their website writing "The Blue Hole is a depression in the streambed rock of the Rondout Creek, a unique natural feature formed by sand and swirling gravel in an ancient whirlpool."
They add that the creek is "part of the New York City drinking water watershed."
Peekamoose Blue Hole Grows In Popularity Over The Years
Over the years the Peekamoose Blue Hole has grown exponentially in popularity.
In 2022, the NYS DEC shared that Peekamoose saw a "record increase in the number of visitors."
With the increase in visitors at Peekamoose and other popular swimming holes like Kaaterskill Cove officials also saw an "increased rescues, trash, and environmental damage."
The DEC reminds visitors that Peekamoose is a "carry in/carry out facility." Visitors are required to take out any trash they bring in.
Permits have been needed to visit the popular swimming hole since as far back as 2018 and it looks as though this year is no different.
Permits Needed to Visit Peekamoose Blue Hole in Grahamsville, NY
Just like swimming seasons before, Peekamoose Blue Hole will require guests in 2025 to have a permit to visit.
In early May of 2025 the DEC posted to their social media pages with this friendly reminder:
all visitors are required to reserve a permit from May 15th- September 15th. Permits can be reserved up to seven days in advance but no less than 24 hours before your visit.
Permits are $10 a piece and each will be link to a vehicle with a 5 person maximum capacity. The permits must be displayed on/in your vehicle.
Peekamoose Blue Hole guests can get their permits on the Reserva America website.
