Over 100,000 New Yorkers Embrace Digital ID for Faster Airport Security
New York State has introduced a groundbreaking digital solution to make airport security screenings faster and more convenient. The New York Mobile ID (MiD) is a secure digital version of a state-issued driver’s license, learner permit, or ID, accessible through a smartphone. Since its launch in June, over 100,000 New Yorkers have enrolled in this innovative service.
Streamlined Travel Experience
The New York Mobile ID offers a contactless and secure way to verify your identity at nearly 30 participating airports nationwide, including all terminals at LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports. Through a partnership with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), New Yorkers can now use their MiD at TSA security checkpoints, simplifying the travel experience and reducing wait times.
Expanding Usage Beyond Airports
The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is actively working to expand the use of the New York Mobile ID beyond airports. Businesses across the state, including auto dealers, bars, restaurants, and financial institutions, are being educated on how to accept Mobile ID as a valid form of identification. This broader acceptance of the MiD aims to make everyday transactions more secure and efficient.
Robust Security Measures
The New York Mobile ID is designed with privacy and security as top priorities. It complies with international identification standards and uses advanced encryption to protect personal information. The app can only be unlocked through Face ID, TouchID, or a secure PIN, ensuring that only the authorized user can access their MiD. Importantly, the data on when and where the MiD is used is not tracked or stored, safeguarding user privacy.
Easy Enrollment Process
Enrolling in the New York Mobile ID is simple. Users can download the app from the App Store or Google Play, register their phone number, and upload images of their physical ID. A quick selfie is taken to verify the user’s identity against DMV records. Once verified, the MiD is ready to be used wherever it is accepted, including in other states and countries.
