Original Walkway Over The Hudson Pavilion Donated To Poughkeepsie
An exciting new pavilion is coming to the Walkway Over The Hudson next year and the original one has just been donated to the City of Poughkeepsie.
The Friends of the Walkway Over The Hudson along with Siegrist & Sons Construction teamed up to relocate the East Gate Pavilion a little over a mile away in Mansion Square Park between North Hamilton and North Clinton Streets. According to Walkway Executive Director Elizabeth Waldstein, 'adaptive use is in the DNA of the Walkway Over The Hudson...everyone involved worked together to ensure the structure lives on to the benefit of the people of the City of Poughkeepsie and the Hudson Valley.'
The process involved closing the Poughkeepsie entrance to the Walkway for the day. First, the roof was removed and placed on a waiting flatbed truck on Parker Avenue. The crew from Siegrist & Sons operated a crane donated by Hudson Valley Crane Company and moved on to the dual structures after securing the roof. A new poured concrete slab awaited them at Mansion Square Park and the reconstruction went smoothly.
Since the Walkway Over The Hudson opened in 2012 the East Gate Pavilion has been a welcome center for visitors looking for Walkway tours, to purchase souvenirs, or to get information from Walkway Ambassadors. The original pavilion was designed by Matthew Ballos and John Storyk of Walters-Storyk Design Group and was constructed by Bob and Amanda Baxter of Baxter Building Corporation.
Construction on the new East Gate Plaza is expected to begin soon and will be completed in 2021. The project will more than double the space available at the top of the Washington Street stairs and will provide an ideal gathering space for community events.
Should there be closures during construction, access to both sides of the river will still be available via the Walkway Loop Trail.
