Orange County Teen Charged For Shooting Taxi Driver, Drugs

An Orange County teenager is accused of shooting a local taxi driver, being in possession of heroin and more.

On Thursday, a Special Investigation Non-Fatal Shooting Task Force, consisting of a City of Newburgh Police Department Detective and an Orange County D.A. Investigator, along with members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force conducted a check of a home in the City of Newburgh for Syed Abdul-Khabir.

The 17-year-old had an active Orange County Court felony warrant which had been issued in November of 2016. Before his arrest, Abdul-Khabir was allegedly found to be in possession of narcotics.

A search of the home yielded the recovery of approximately 232 glassine envelopes of suspected heroin and a loaded .357 caliber Ruger revolver, police say.

The revolver was reported stolen in 2007 from Marshall Creek, PA, officials say.

Abdul-Khabir is also accused of shooting a taxi driver on Feb. 2. The driver was shot while sitting in his parked cab on Broadway in the City of Newburgh.

Abdul-Khabir was charged with criminal use of a firearm, two counts of possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment, assault, two-counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession of stolen property.
