Orange County Patient Tests Positive for Coronavirus

An Ulster County man learned he has coronavirus after going to a medical facility in Orange County.

On Wednesday, Crystal Run Healthcare learned that one of its patients tested positive for COVID-19. Providers and staff involved in the care of the patient followed Crystal Run’s stringent COVID-19 plan, based on CDC and New York State Department of Health guidelines, officials say.

"As a result, we were able to identify the patient quickly and take appropriate action, working in conjunction with local public health authorities," Lynn Haskin, a spokesperson for Crystal Run Healthcare said in a press release. "As the largest provider of medical services in the region, serving patients in Orange, Sullivan and Rockland counties, we recognized the inevitability of diagnosing COVID-19 among those for whom we provide care.

Crystal Run has been preparing for this eventuality for weeks, officials say.

"Crystal Run is committed to doing everything possible to minimize the spread of Coronavirus in our community and will continue to follow the guidance of the CDC and DOH to ensure the safety of our patients, staff and community," Haskin said.

Crystal Run Healthcare didn't provide more information about the patient who tested positive. However, Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan later said the second confirmed Ulster County resident with coronavirus went to a medical facility in Orange County for his confirmed coronavirus test.

Ryan said during a press conference the man went to Crystal Run Healthcare in Middletown.

Ryan said the patient is an elderly man from the Town of Shawangunk. It's unclear if he traveled internationally.

Officials believe he had "potential contact" with employees of the Wallkill Central School District. Out "of an abundance of caution" all the schools in the district will be closed through the weekend for cleaning.
