New York State Forest Rangers Rescue Moose From Frozen Lake
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation shared a video over the weekend of an incredible rescue.
Back on Thursday, January 16th, DEC Forest Rangers, and ECO's were called to Lake Abanakee in Hamilton Count. A moose had broken through the ice and was struggling in the cold waters of the lake.
In a post on social media the NYS DEC explains the moose had walked out onto the lake and fell through the ice about 200 feet from the town beach.
Forest Rangers dressed in cold water rescue gear arrived on the scene and "ventured out onto the ice." The post goes on to explain:
Ranger Nahor began cutting a channel with his chainsaw while Lieutenant Higgins cleared the ice blocks, creating a pathway for the moose to free itself. Rangers Savarie and Nahor then guided the moose to shallow water near the shore.
You can watch the rescue below:
Thankfully, once the moose was out of the water it was able to walk off into the woods.
