New Construction Project Underway on New York State Thruway

If you are one of the thousands of motorists who travel on the New York State Thruway every day be prepared for delays as a $9.3 million construction project has begun.

The New York State Thruway Authority (NYSTA) is warning drivers that travel a specific stretch of the toll road to expect delays as they have started a massive construction project to preserve four bridges on the northbound and southbound sides of the heavily traveled highway.

New York Thruway Construction Project Begins

Earlier this year the NYSTA announced that they would be conducting numerous construction upgrades on the toll road and that drivers should expect delays in some parts for an extended period of time. One of those projects has begun as construction has started as the Thruway Authority attempts to preserve four bridges on I-87 in Greene County, New York according to a press release.

Thruway Bridges Under Construction

The $9.3 million bridge project will include work on the north and southbound sides of the Thruway bridge over Kaaterskill Creek at milepost 111.13 and the Thruway bridge over the Catskill Creek at milepost 113.22. Both bridges which were built in 1955 and have more than 33,000 motorists travel across daily are located between the Catskill/Cairo exit 21 and the Saugerties/Woodstock exit 20.

Thruway Authority Executive Director Frank G. Hoare had this to say about the project,

“The project to preserve the Kaaterskill Creek and Catskill Creek bridges is one of several critical infrastructure improvement projects scheduled in our Capital Program this year. The concrete repairs and surrounding work will enhance the safety of the bridges and help maintain their longevity for years to come."

 

New traffic Patterns on NYS Thruway

Construction started on April 18th, and until further notice both the Kaaterskill Creek Bridge and Catskill Creek Bridge will have all traffic shifted to the northbound side for work on the southbound bridges. Work on the northbound bridges is expected to take place in 2025. All Motorists are urged to be alert in work zones and follow the posted work zone speed limits. Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone, so slow down!
