Authorities Assist Suicidal Subject on Mid-Hudson Bridge

In a press release the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department shared they received a call regarding a "suicidal male on the Mid Hudson Bridge."

The 911 call was came in at approximately 7:49 pm.

Several units were "dispatched to the area and located the distraught male on the span." According to the press release authorities on the scene utilized their crisis intervention training.

They were able to start a conversation with the man which lead to the subject being "transported to an area hospital for evaluation and treatment."

Season Depression Disorder Spikes This Time of Year

This time of year as there are changes in sunlight, Seasonal Depression Disorder, also known as SAD, becomes prevalent.

The National Institute of Mental Health defines SAD as a "type of major depression with seasonal patterns." These patterns usually start in late fall, winter and last until the spring.

These patters are caused by "less sunlight affecting brain chemicals" like serotonin and melatonin, as well as lack of vitamin D that can lead to fatigue, weight gain, oversleeping and more.

While Seasonal Depression is very real, many media outlets report that there is spike in suicides during the month of December.  The University of Pennsylvania reported in 2025 that December actually has the lowest suicide rate throughout the year.
