A tragic accident took place in Rhinebeck on Sunday and claimed one life.

According to the Poughkeepsie Journal and the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, a preliminary investigation shows that a pickup truck, driven by Jeremy Staats of Red Hook, was traveling south bound on Route 9 and crossed over the center lines and struck a mini-van.

The mini-van was driven by Dwayne Crantz, of Ulster County who died in the accident.

Police told the Journal that Jeremy Staats fled the scene of the accident but was later located by deputies and is currently in custody. He has been charged with second degree vehicular manslaughter, as well as leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. Staats was also charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.

He was sent to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail or $50,000 bond.
