
Driver Dies After Vehicle Plunges Into Lake Mahopac Monday Night

On Monday night March 9th, 2026, around 5:45pm the Carmel Police Department received several calls regarding a vehicle driving into Lake Mahopac.
As the calls came in and law enforcement arrived on the scene, the Carmel PD announced to the local community that there were road closures along East Lake Boulevard between McMahon Place and North Lake Boulevard as they investigated the accident.
The Carmel Police Department is now sharing more details about the accident and the driver.
More Details Released Regard Jeep In Lake Mahopac
According to a press release from the Carmel Police Department, witnesses saw a female driver "entering the lake from Swan Cove."
The press release continues:
Arriving Carmel PD and Putnam County Sheriffs units flagged down by passers-by determined the Jeep went into an open water area of Lake Mahopac and was fully submerged approximately 30 yards off shore north of the St. John’s Prayer Garden on East Lake Boulevard.
Along with law enforcement, the Mahopac Falls Fire Department Dive Team and the Yorktown Heights Fire Department were also on the scene.
Driver Identified in Lake Mahopac Accident, Dies At Hospital
According to the press release there was only one person in the vehicle.
The driver was later identified as a 55-year-old female form Somers, New York. At the scene the driver was removed from the vehicle by rescue divers and was unresponsive.
Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department and Carmel EMS performed life saving measures. While enroute to Putnam Hospital Center they were able to help the driver "regain a pulse."
In the latest update from the Carmel Police Department "The female driver later died at the hospital."
Carmel PD reports that the incident remains under investigation by their detectives. If anyone witnessed the accident or has any additional information they are asked to call Carmel Police Detectives at 845-628-1300.
