Where Did The Catskills Get Its Name?

Some visitors may question where the Catskills got its name from while locals may have an exact answer. It's possible that the Catskills got its name from a local creek, waterway or waterfall.

However, there's also the speculation of the Catskills getting its name from cats such as mountain lions and bobcats who once roamed the area more frequently then they do now.

Many websites and Hudson Valley businesses such as The Emerson Resort, come back to the same idea about how the Catskills may be named after "catamounts" while others believe it's only related to local creeks.
