What Happened: Terrifying Head-On Accident in the Hudson Valley

In every parent's worst nightmare, a school bus transporting students was hit head-on by a car in Sullivan County, NY.

While traffic accidents are an unfortunate reality that New York drivers face on a daily basis, the dramatic crash near Hurleyville, NY seems to have been avoidable.

Despite photos from the scene showing both vehicles sustaining massive front-end damage,  the occupants of the school bus, including six students, were reportedly unharmed. The driver of the car was reportedly treated at Garnet Medical Center-Catskills for a hand injury. Other recent bus crashes in the Hudson Valley show just how lucky the students were in Hurleyville.

In September 2023, I-84 was shut down after a fatal crash (below) involving a charter bus transporting students to a nearby band camp. In March 2022, a head-on crash involving a school bus and a police vehicle in LaGrange, NY claimed the life of a bus monitor.

While details from the recent crash are still scarce, police say they believe the driver of the car, a 2023 Kia Forte, crossed over a double yellow line on Old Liberty Road and into oncoming traffic, where it struck the school bus. Video (below) shows the aftermath of the collision.
