New Services To Aid Poughkeepsie Seniors Following SSA Closure
It's been a concerning few months following the news of the Poughkeepsie Social Security Office's closure for renovations in early 2025, and then the recent developments regarding DOGE. At the end of February, the Poughkeepsie location of the SSA was listed on the DOGE website under 'savings' with no explanation or additional details.
Recently, though, Dutchess County Government, in collaboration with the Dutchess County Office of the Aging, has announced plans to aid seniors in the local community that may need assistance accessing social security services as a result of all of the aforementioned changes.

DC Office for the Aging Offers SSA Assistance To Seniors
For those in Dutchess County, especially seniors who may find travel to be an issue, the fact that the closest Social Security Office is now 30+ minutes away, in Middletown, is a concern.
The Dutchess County Office for the Aging (OFA) is offering assistance to those in the community most impacted by the limited in-person services at the SSA. From 9am until 5pm Monday through Friday, the OFA staff is available at 114 Delafield Street, in Poughkeepsie, to assist seniors with the Social Security phone system, or with online benefit applications.
For those needing assistance, a call can be made to OFA at 845-486-2555, or toll-free at 866-486-2555, or via email at OFA@DutchessNY.gov

Local Officials Advocate For Poughkeepsie
Along with Congressman Pat Ryan, who has been extremely vocal about the concerns with the Poughkeepsie Social Security Office's status, and especially the location showing up on the DOGE site, County Executive Sue Serino is also working to find a solution. Dutchess County Government shared that County Executive Serino continues to work with other federal officials to 'advocate for the full reopening of the Poughkeepsie Social Security Office and assure its long-term future.'
