The melee involved 20 incarcerated individuals, who refused to comply with officers' commands according to the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS). The failure to follow commands prompted staff to use OC spray and mechanical restraints to get them under control. During the incident, an officer recovered a "razor-like weapon" from one of the inmates who was on the floor attempting to reach for it.
