A Hudson Valley high school sophomore is the fastest girl in United States history. On Sunday, at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor track and field championship in Greensboro, N.C., North Rockland Sophomore Katelyn Tuohy broke the record for fastest outdoor mile ever ran by a U.S. high school girl.

Tuohy ran the outdoor mile in 4:33.87, breaking a record set 36 years ago. Polly Plummer set the previous outdoor mile record in 1982, with a time of 4:35.24.

Tuohy won the race by 16 seconds. It's her third national record in 2018. She set the outdoor two-mile record in 9:51.29 and the indoor 5K record in 15:37.12, according to FloTrack.

In a recent article, the New York Times called Tuohy "America’s Next Great Running Hope," adding she seems destined for "Olympic medals."

"She might be the best high school runner ever already,” Bronxville coach Jim Mitchell told the New York Times.
