Depending on who you ask, this weekend is considered 4th of July weekend.

The argument can be made for the next few weeks as celebrating the 4th of July always seems like a month long celebration. With said celebration comes fireworks. Some of us love them, others not big fans.

Dogs usually fall into the category of those who don't enjoy the crackling of fireworks every night until August.

ABC 7NY is preparing dog owners for what is likely to be stressful weekend for your pup.

They report that the rate of runaway dogs goes up over the holiday saying "More dogs run away on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year - and fireworks are largely to blame."

There are a few ways to make sure that your furry friend feels safe during firework displays. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says that if you're dog is going to home alone on the 4th to "make sure it has its favorite toy and a small, cozy area to take comfort in." They also add that you should probably not bring your dog to a firework show, as the loud noises and unfamiliar crowd will "add to your dog's anxiety."

The Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, Inc. suggests taking your dog for a long walk before night time or play with them enough so that their tired and hopefully sleep through it all.

More suggestions include:

  • Keep windows and curtains closed
  • Play video clips of fireworks the weeks leading up to the 4th of July to get your pet accustom to the sounds.
  • Use a white noise machine.
  • Make sure you remain calm and reassuring.

Happy 4th of July!
