Hey! Put that rake down, and leave those leaves where they are.

The Hudson Valley is perhaps the best place to view beautiful fall foliage at it's peak. We have the pleasure of watching the leaves change beautiful colors, and create a gorgeous landscapes.

Then, unfortunately the leaves fall down and make a huge mess. But, before you grab that rake or leaf blower, we have some excuses for you to go spend time doing something more entertaining.

According to the National Wildlife Federation, here are some reasons to skip raking up those leaves this year.

  1. Provide Habitat for Wildlife: Frogs, salamanders, turtles and a number of other species rely of leaf litter. the leaves provide cover and nest materials for many species
  2. Provide Nutrients for Wildlife: Leaf litter helps maintain a healthy ecosystem in your yard. Birds will feed on the seed heads and stalks during winter.
  3. Reduce Waste: Yard debris is taken to landfills and dumped. Yard trimmings accounted for close to 14% of solid waste.
  4. Increase Fertility of your Soil: As plant material decomposes, nutrients are added to your soil. Leaving leaves also adds to water retention.
  5. Reduce Pollution: Leaf blowers pollute, trucks that haul yard waste pollute, and fertilizers pollute. Use eco-friendly ways to dispose of your leaves.
  6. Save Time: Think about how much time you'll save by not raking leaves this year. Man, you could paint a portrait, watch more football, I mean think of the possibilities!

So put that rake down, be lazy this Fall and enjoy all that extra time!
