Got an Expired License, or Inspection? Here is What to do
Most New York State issued documents are still valid even if they expired after March 1st.
While most of us have been stuck at home during the coronavirus pandemic unable to really drive our cars anywhere, you might have forgotten about the inspection or registration on your car or truck or maybe your licence has expired. If you have, we have some good news, you're still legal in New York.
According to the Times Herald Record, any New York motorists that have expiring vehicle safety inspections have be granted an extension for the remainder of the coronavirus health emergency, meaning that drivers will not be given a ticket if pulled over with an expired inspection sticker. The same extension goes for registrations and expired drivers licenses.
The extension started with the month of March and will continue through the month of June, so if you have a red inspection sticker that has a hole punched in March or April and you get pulled over, you won't be issued a ticket.
As far as all the other licensees and car documents that you would normally take care of at your local DMV, commercial driver’s license road tests can now be scheduled at most DMV offices, if you are trying to schedule a Class D road test (that's what most of us have), they are still not available at this time as DMV offices are still closed for in person visits.
When road tests are able to be done DMV road test examiners will wear gloves, face shields and have hand sanitizer to keep themselves protected and all customers will be required to wear masks and will be screened before beginning the test. If you had a road test canceled because of COVID-19, you should hear from the DMV starting next week to reschedule your test.
When an announcement is made as to the day and time our Hudson valley DMV's are open for in person visits we will update you on air and online.
