Legendary Chewing Gum Being Discontinued After 50+ Years
A piece of many childhoods has officially been "retired"!
One thing I think most of us can agree on is that at one time or another, we enjoy chewing on a piece of gum. Maybe you've used it to stop yourself from doing something else like eating or smoking, or you chew a piece every once in a while to freshen up your breath. Whatever you use it for most of us have a few brands of gum that we reach for every time we buy a pack, right? Well, it appears that one of the legends in the gum world has announced that it's being discontinued after 50+ years.
Fruit Stripe Gum Discontinued
According to the company that manufactures Fruit Stripe Gum, Ferrara Candy, the gum is being discontinued and eventually will disappear from store shelves if it hasn't already. A Ferrara Candy representative had this to say about "sunsetting" the gum that was introduced to the world in 1969 by the Beech-Nut company,
"We have made the difficult decision to sunset Fruit Stripe Gum, but consumers may still be able to find the product at select retailers nationwide. The decision to sunset this product was not taken lightly, and we considered many factors before coming to this decision, including consumer preferences, and purchasing patterns."
What is Fruit Stripe Gum?
If you've never tried it, Fruit Stripe Gum was the gum that was known for flavors like "Wet n' Wild Melon, Cherry, Lemon, Orange and Peach." The gum was also full of bright colors and each piece was "zebra-striped". The only downside of the gum over the 50+ years was that many users often complained that the flavor of each piece would only last a few minutes (if you were lucky...LOL).

Did Fruit Stripe Gum Have a Mascot?
Of course, they did! As a matter of fact, the mascot was even "name-dropped" on the popular show Jeopardy back in the day according to Food and Wine. The Jeopardy! question asked the contestants what kind of animal he was. The answer...He was a zebra, and his name was "Yipes"! The Fruit Stripe slogan was "Yipes! Stripes!"
