
Hyde Park National Historic Site Updates Their BARK Ranger Program
Is Your Dog Bark Ranger Material?
Are you looking to give your dog a title other than man/woman's best friend? How about Bark Ranger?!
The National Parks Service explains that as part of the Healthy People Healthy Parks Initiative they have something called the BARK Ranger Program.
This program was created to ensure that both pets and their owners "learn how to have a positive experience" in unfamiliar environments.
So what is the criteria to become a Bark Ranger? According to the National Parks Service it's pretty simple:
- Bag your pet’s waste
- Always leash your pet
- Respect wildlife
- Know where you can go
Different Bark Ranger Programs Across the United States
It's not guaranteed that all National Parks sites will have a BARK Ranger program, but they programs vary across the country.
The National Parks website writes "Bark Ranger programs are uniquely designed by each park for visitors and their pets to that park experience."
They go on to add that some parks have a "Walk With a Ranger Program" and others have a pledge you take with your pet.
There are several New York National Parks that take part in the BARK Ranger program including the following:
- The Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site- Hyde Park, NY
- Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site- Hyde Park, NY
- Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site- Hyde Park, NY
- Martin Van Buren National Historic Site- Kinderhook, NY
- Fort Stanwix National Monument - Rome, NY
- Fire Island National Seashore- Ocean Beach, NY
- Hamilton Grange National Memorial - New York, NY
- Sagamore Hill National Historic Site- Oyster Bay, NY
One of the aforementioned sites is upgrading their BARK Ranger program this summer.
FDR National Historic Site Hosts Bark Ranger Parade
FDR is updating their BARK Ranger program and holding a parade to celebrate. On Facebook on Monday August 4th, between 10 am to 2 pm will be BARK Ranger kick-off.
If you and your pup attend you'll be able to get a "brand-new badge" and march in the puppy parade. BARK Ranger swag also includes a membership cards and stickers.
Then, Park Ranger Abby will guide "new recruits by the gravesite of national hero, Fala, and to the Home of FDR." Learn more below:
