Tragically, the driver, identified as 62-year-old Martin Muller of Mahopac, NY, died at the hospital from his injuries.
Crash Investigation Underway
A preliminary investigation determined Muller was driving his 2009 Harley-Davidson motorcycle on the northbound side of the NYS Thruway when the back tire on the motorcycle blew out. Troopers said the blowout caused the motorcycle to turn sideways, ejecting Muller onto the roadway. Muller landed about 80 feet south of the bike, which rolled into the left lane until it came to a complete stop, according to troopers.
Unfortunately, accidents like this happen. According to data from the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research, 194 people were killed in motorcycle crashes in New York State in 2023, and sadly, that number is on the rise.
Motorcycle Safety in New York
To keep motorcycle riders safe on New York roads, the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee has issued a warning to residents informing them that motorcycle crashes are on the rise.
"As the summer travel season heats up, more motorcyclists will hit the open road to explore New York State and beyond," said Mark J.F. Schroeder, NYS Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner and Chair of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. "It is so important for everyone on the road to be aware of their surroundings and other drivers or pedestrians. Enjoy your ride, and make sure that everyone else gets the same opportunity to get to their destinations and back home safely."
Drivers should always give motorcyclists plenty of space, pass with care, and always look twice.
