According to batweek.org, Bats are vital to our natural world and our economy. Just because you might not see a bat, that doesn't mean they aren't out there every night working hard to rid the world of annoying bugs such as mosquitoes. They are also very important to plants. They are pollinators which means these night creatures help plants grow flowers and spread seeds.

As the weather gets cooler bats will retreat to their winter homes. As the bugs diminish bats will head to caves and mines in order to hibernate. It is important that bats are not disturbed during the winter slumber.

If you want to observe bats one of the best places to do that in New York is the Basha Kill Wildlife Management Area in Orange and Ulster Counties. This area is located just behind the Shawangunk Ridge just south of Wurtsboro.
