A young dog has been on a terrifying journey after escaping at a New York State rest stop.

Thankfully a dog recovery organization stepped in to help bring the dog, named Lilly, to safety.

Terrifying Escape: Dog on the Loose on New York State Thruway

Buddah Dog Rescue & Recovery, an organization dedicated to rescuing lost dogs or dogs on the run, recently shared a story about a dog on the run for 17 days.

While a dog on the loose is scary in itself, Lilly was running loose around the area of part of the New York State Thruway for 17 days.

Lilly had been in the back of an 18-wheeler transportation truck with many other dogs rescued from the south, heading to a new rescue. At a New York rest stop the transportation driver, who was a male, attempted to slip a lead around Lilly's neck.

Unfortunately, Lilly has a fear of men and as Buddha Dog Rescue writes "reacted in terror" and proceeded to take off out of the back of the 18-wheeler that  had left the door open.

After the transport driver alerted the rescue and was unsuccessful with getting Lilly back in the truck, they took off without her leaving Lilly to fend for herself on the side of the New York State Thruway, Palisades Parkway and near railroad tracks.

Social Media Post Hinder Escaped Dog Search on NYS Thruway

Word got out about Lilly's escape and many local dog lovers started to spread the word. While sharing her story and telling others to keep an eye out was helpful, it also caused Lilly to run further away from safety.

Buddha Dog Rescue explains that they found out that there were "well-intentioned" people looking for Lilly but using polls and poking through the brush which could have spooked the young dog.

They add that it is "so important when working working a lost dog case that we ask that all sightings be kept off of social media." Writing:

Well-intentioned people coming out looking for the dogs can be one of the biggest hindrance in Lost Dog recovery. Lilly unmercifully endured an additional ten days in the bitter cold and snow due to this.
