Dog Rescued From High Kill Shelter in CA, Finds Forever Home in NY
Snowy, a 2-year-old 9lb Chihuahua, was recently rescued from a high kill shelter in California. She was brought in by Happily Furever After based out of Connecticut.
After only 1 month at the rescue with a foster family, Snowy was adopted out to a family in Poughkeepsie, New York.
However, only 15 minutes after getting to her forever home tragedy struck Snowy and her family.

According to a post from Happily Furever After Rescue Snowy, who should have been on a leash at all times outside due to her skittish nature, was off leash with a backdoor open a startled Snowy took off.

The rescue goes on to explain that Snowy was missing for "two heart-wrenching days" in the pouring rain.
During those 48 hours Snowy's foster family, the Happily Furever After team and members of the community search day and night hoping to find her and bring her back to safety.
During the search on Saturday, May 10th, 2025, members of the search team found Snowy who had be struck by a car. They write:
The driver never stopped and Snowy was left motionless on the side of the road.
Happily Furever After Rescue Hoping for a Snowy Miracle
After being seen by the Guardian Veterinary team, they determined that Snowy had a fractured spine, facial woods, road rash and was paralyzed in the bottom half of her body.
According to the statement on social media by Happily Furever, Snowy was a candidate for spinal repair surgery.
An emergency surgery was approved that was estimated at around $20,000 including additional testing like CT scans and bloodwork.
Thankfully, Snowy underwent a successful surgery, but is on a long road to recovery. She is still paralyzed, but there is some movement in her back legs which means there is no neurological damage.
Happily Furever is a 100% volunteer run rescue and they are currently fundraising in hopes of helping Snowy on her road to recovery.
